The Carolina Hurricanes have been playing in North Carolina since 1997, when they relocated from Hartford, Conn., where they were known as the Hartford Whalers. They first played in Greensboro, N.C., until a new arena in Raleigh was built.

The Hurricanes have one Stanley Cup to their credit since the move: in 2006, when they beat the Edmonton Oilers in seven games. They made the Stanley Cup Finals in 2002 but lost in five games to Detroit.

The Canes have defeated the Washington Capitals 4-1 in the Second Round and have now advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals for the second time in three seasons. They are now facing the Florida Panthers in the Eastern Conference Finals, and have struggled mightily, trailing 3-1 in the series after getting blown out in Game 3 in Sunrise but surviving Game 4. The season is over, as the Florida Panthers defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 in Game 5, effectively ending their season.

Carolina Hurricanes Roster

The Carolina Hurricanes finished the season with a record of 47-30-5 with 99 points and second in the Metropolitan Division, third in the Eastern Conference, and fifth in the NHL.

GM Don Waddell has done a good job of building a young roster. Now, they look to add another championship, but will have to wait yet another season.

Canes Offense

  • Line 1: Left Wing Taylor Hall, Center Sebastian Aho, Right Wing Seth Jarvis
  • Line 2: Left Wing  Andrei Svechnikov, Center Jesperi Kotkaniemi, and Right Wing Jackson Blake
  • Line 3: Right Wing Jordan Martinook, Center Jordan Staal, Right Wing Logan Stankoven
  • Line 4: Left Wing Eric Robinson, Center Mark Jankowski, Right Wing William Carrier

Injured: Left wing Jesper Fast

The Hurricanes rank sixth in goal differential this season at +40. As a team, the Hurricanes players have 646 points cumulatively so far this season, which is good for the ninth-highest among NHL squads.

No team got more shot attempts per 60 minutes in the National Hockey League last season than Carolina, at 58.44 per game. There were many nights when they couldn't convert enough of those shots into goals.

Despite being a great team, the Canes have struggled to convert their shots into goals. So far, they've not answered the call, ranking 21st in shooting percentage (10.2%).

Center Sebastian Aho finished the season by leading the offense with 29 goals and 45 assists so far this season. He has a lot of talented, if unheralded, teammates on the forward lines. Center Seth Jarvis ed Aho's scoring well thus far, with 32 goals of his own.

Carolina Hurricanes Defense Pairings

  • Line 1: Jaccob Slavin and Brent Burns
  • Line 2: Dmitry Orlov and Alexander Nikishkin
  • Line 3: Shayne Gostisbehere and Scott Walker

The Hurricanes have an excellent defense led by Jaccob Slavin. He might be the best defenseman you've never heard of. He's big and very smooth with the puck in his own zone, and he usually adds 30-40 points of offense a year, too.

Veteran Brent Burns is his defensive partner, and he had a fine first season with the Hurricanes after many years in San Jose. Burns is 40, but he doesn't play like it. In fact, he is second on the team in ice time and one of the game's smartest players at both ends.

Carolina Hurricanes Goaltending

  • Frederik Andersen
  • Pytor Kochetkov

Goaltending has improved this season. Whereas it was seen as a weakness last season, it is currently a strength, ironically, with the same two goaltenders. Pyotr Kochetkov finished the season with a mark of 27-16-3 with a 2.60 goals-against average and a save percentage of .897 through 47 games. Meanwhile, Frederik Andersen went 13-8-1 with a 2.50 goals-against average and a save percentage of .899. Both have been instrumental in ensuring that the Hurricanes rank seventh in goals against this season. Andersen returned from injury and made 13 saves while allowing one goal in a Game 1 win over the Capitals. Later, Andersen had a shutout in Game 3 to give the Canes the lead against the Caps, and played well again in Game 4.

Notable Carolina Hurricanes Team Players

Sebastian Aho is certainly the team's best offensive player, but there are other good scorers here, too. Included are forwards such as Jack Roslovic, Seth Jarvis, Jordan Staal, and Logan Stankoven.

Defensively, Jaccob Slavin and Brent Burns are the top pairing, and they have gotten plenty of ice time from coach Rod Brind'Amour. Carolina's defense has a good 3-4 pairing as well, with Sean Walker and Shayne Gostisbehere. Slavin scored his first career playoff overtime goal in Game 1 against the Capitals.

Pyotr Kochetkov filled in for Frederik Andersen, who was sidelined for a few months. Andersen is currently the starter in the Eastern Conference Final.

NHL Hurricanes 2024-2025 Season Outlook

It has been an outstanding season for Carolina. Unfortunately, the wheels have fallen off in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Hurricanes are lost 4-1 after losing the first two games at the Lenovo Center and Game 3 at the Amerant Bank Arena. Somehow, they survived Game 4 and ended a ridiculous string of 15 losses in a row in the Eastern Conference Final. It was their first Conference Final win since taking Game 7 in 2006. Alas, it was not enough as they fell in Game 5.

The Hurricanes Stanley Cup odds are off the boards. Unfortunately, their awful start was not good enough to overcome.

It's worth noting that the Hurricanes' sportsbook partner is Fanatics North Carolina, so look out for special offers on Hurricanes betting.
